Twitter announced yesterday that the popular Periscope social media app will now be able to play directly on their platform. Named the iPhone App of the Year last month by Apple, Periscope has exploded in popularity with its live streaming interface and has been credited as being a revolutionary step in the evolution of social media.

Up until now, Periscope videos have been able to be linked to Twitter feeds but the company is looking to eradicate the extra step by making the videos playable instantly. It’s a practical move by Twitter, who owns Periscope, and one that will give Periscope yet another distinct advantage over its direct competitor Meerkat.

Twitter and Periscope will begin rolling out the new feature over the next few days beginning with the Twitter iOS platform before moving on to Android and web systems.
