One metric to look at is the number of interconnections between backbone providers. This number has been steadily climbing over the years and right now sits around 500,000 connections. Recently, some routers ran out of memory to hold so many connections and system administrators scrambled to upgrade them. This caused service disruptions for many.

Here at Netsville we examined our own infrastructure and decided as a preventative measure to upgrade as well.

The issue was specific to certain types of routers that we weren’t using. However, the Internet isn’t getting any smaller. Its growth is relentless. Expect more hiccups, bumps…and bites along the way.
