Oracle, the developer of Java, announced this week that it is progressing towards a plugin-free web hence the removal of the pesky Java plug-in from browsers. In a press release, they stated:
By late 2015, many browser vendors have either removed or announced timelines for the removal of standards based plugin support, eliminating the ability to embed Flash, Silverlight, Java and other plugin based technologies.
With modern browser vendors working to restrict and reduce plugin support in their products, developers of applications that rely on the Java browser plugin need to consider alternative options such as migrating from Java Applets (which rely on a browser plugin) to the plugin-free Java Web Start technology.
Oracle plans to deprecate the Java browser plugin in JDK 9. This technology will be removed from the Oracle JDK and JRE in a future Java SE release.
As with the death of Flash, it’s a move that is far from surprising, with the allegorical vultures circling in baited anticipation of its eventual demise since browser after browser (such as Chrome and Edge) stopped supporting such plug-ins. Furthermore, as Gizmodo pointed out in their giddy eulogy, “Java is a terrible blight on our computer security that must be stopped at all costs. Everyone from independent developers to the Department of Homeland Security have [called out] Java for opening up access to a billion computers thanks to zero-day programming bugs.”
And so, with the plug more or less pulled, we bid adieu to the Java plug-in as it continues its slow “deprecation” over the coming months. It’s about time.
